Singin' in the Lane

Have you ever suffered that horrible feeling
of having your Pastor ask you at-the-last-minute to sing?
And just because you're so polite,
You mumble through your teeth, "All right!"
And suddenly the silence grew
As it descends through the room,
And the whispering sanctuary starts to ring,
With "Lift up your hands, she's gonna sing!"
Well, here I am tonight in a great sweat--
An innocent victim of etiquette--
I'm going to sing but not for long!
And though it's old, it's a lovely song!
Why am I smiling and why do I sing?
Why does September seem sunny as spring?
Why do I get up each morning and start?
Happy and get up with joy in my heart?
Why is each new task a trifle to do?
Because I am living a life full of You, Jesus--
I'm singing in the lane,
Just singing in the lane!
What a glorious feeling,
I'm happy again!
I'm laughing at the cars,
So jammed up ahead!
The Son's in my heart
And I'm ready for His Love
Let the light of faith chase
Every doubt from the place
Come on with the rain
I've a smile on my face!
I drive down the lane
With a happy refrain
And singing, just singing in the lane
I'm singing in the lane,
Oh, I'm singing in the lane--
What a glor-- what a glorious feeling!
I'm happy again!
I'm laughing at the cars,
So jammed up ahead!
The Son's in my heart
I'm ready for His Love
Let the light of faith chase
Every doubt from the place
And come on with the rain
I've a smile on my face!
I drive down the lane
With a happy refrain
And singing, singing
Singing in the lane!
Oh, I'm singing in the lane
Ah, I'm happy again
My troubles have fled
A rapture's ahead
I'm singing, singing
I'm singing in the lane
